BIRMINGHAM, AL. (THECOUNT) — Xavier Marquez Gray, 19, has been identified as the decedent in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night in Birmingham, Alabama.

According to Birmingham Police, officers were attempting to apprehend two suspects wanted on multiple outstanding warrants, including warrants related to violent offenses, when the shooting occurred. Authorities also reported recovering multiple firearms from individuals involved in the incident.

Authorities said the incident unfolded at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the 100 block of B.Y. Williams Drive.

Police reported that during the attempted apprehension, one of the suspects exited a vehicle, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

Gray was struck during the incident, according to investigators.

Emergency responders transported Gray to UAB Hospital for treatment.

He later died from gunshot injuries, authorities said.

Police said additional occupants of the vehicle were detained and transported to the Birmingham Police Administration Building for questioning.

The shooting occurred near a Circle K convenience store in Birmingham. Officials emphasized that while the incident took place in a nearby parking area, it did not occur within the Circle K parking lot itself.

Birmingham is Alabama’s largest city and serves as the economic and cultural center of the state. The city is located in Jefferson County and is home to numerous residential neighborhoods, commercial districts, transportation corridors, and healthcare facilities, including UAB Hospital.

UAB Hospital is one of the largest medical centers in Alabama and routinely receives trauma patients from Birmingham and surrounding communities throughout the region.
