OXFORD COUNTY, Maine (THECOUNT) — Carleton Merrill, of Mexico, Maine, was killed Thursday afternoon following a motorcycle crash in Paris, a town in western Maine located in Oxford County, authorities said.

Merrill was 33 years old.

According to reports, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Route 26, also known as Park Street, in Paris.

Investigators said Merrill was operating a 2025 Kawasaki motorcycle and was traveling at a high rate of speed when the collision sequence began.

Authorities reported that Merrill passed one vehicle before swerving in an apparent attempt to avoid another vehicle on the roadway. During the maneuver, the motorcycle struck an embankment and left the roadway.

The impact caused serious injuries to Merrill. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene and he was transported to MaineHealth Stephens Memorial Hospital in nearby Norway for treatment.

Despite medical efforts, Merrill later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Mexico, Merrill’s hometown, is located in Oxford County in western Maine near the Androscoggin River. Paris, where the crash occurred, serves as the county seat of Oxford County and is situated roughly 45 miles northwest of Lewiston.

Route 26 is a major north-south highway through western Maine that connects numerous communities in Oxford County and provides access to recreational areas, mountain destinations, and regional commercial centers. The roadway carries a mixture of local traffic, commercial vehicles, and seasonal tourism traffic throughout the year.

Motorcycle crashes involving excessive speed can significantly increase both stopping distance and impact forces, often resulting in severe injuries. Authorities have indicated speed was a factor in the crash involving Merrill.

Investigators have not released additional details regarding roadway conditions, weather conditions, or any other potential contributing factors. No other injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

The crash remains under active investigation as authorities work to determine the complete sequence of events leading up to the fatal collision.
