Emergency crews with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service responded after receiving reports of a serious crash involving a passenger vehicle and a tractor-trailer.
Authorities said responding personnel located a heavily damaged Volkswagen EOS trapped beneath or against the rear of a semi-truck.
Investigators identified Gannon as the driver of the Volkswagen.
Officials said Gannon was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by rescue crews at the scene.
Despite lifesaving efforts by first responders, Gannon died from injuries sustained in the collision.
According to Maryland State Police, preliminary findings indicate the tractor-trailer had become immovable in the roadway before the crash occurred.
For reasons still under investigation, the Volkswagen subsequently struck the rear of the stopped or disabled semi-truck, investigators said.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was evaluated at the scene but declined transportation to a hospital.
No additional injuries were reported.
The crash caused major disruptions along the Interstate 270 express lanes during the Friday morning commute as emergency crews and investigators worked the scene.
Traffic delays extended through portions of Montgomery County while authorities documented evidence and removed damaged vehicles from the roadway.
Interstate 270 serves as one of the busiest commuter corridors in Maryland, linking Montgomery County with Washington, D.C., Frederick County, and surrounding suburban communities.
The express lanes between Route 28 and Shady Grove Road regularly carry heavy morning commuter traffic into the Washington metropolitan region.
Authorities have not indicated whether speed, visibility, distraction, or roadway conditions may have contributed to the crash.
No charges have been announced.
The Maryland State Police investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or observed either vehicle prior to the crash is encouraged to contact investigators.
