PORTSMOUTH, VA. (THECOUNT) — Timothy A. Caplinger, of Hertford, North Carolina, has been identified as the victim in a fatal single-vehicle crash Saturday night in Portsmouth, Virginia, according to Virginia State Police. Caplinger was 68.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:21 p.m. on Interstate 264 westbound near Greenwood Drive in Portsmouth. Authorities said Caplinger was operating a 2011 Toyota Camry traveling westbound in the left lane at the time of the incident.

According to the preliminary investigation, the vehicle drifted to the right, exited the roadway, and traveled off the right side of the interstate before striking trees located near the shoulder.

Caplinger was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash, officials said.

Virginia State Police reported that a medical emergency is being considered as a possible contributing factor in the incident. No additional vehicles were reported to be involved.

Interstate 264 is a major roadway serving the Portsmouth and Hampton Roads region, carrying consistent traffic through urban and suburban areas. The stretch near Greenwood Drive includes multiple lanes and access points commonly used by evening motorists.

The crash remains under investigation by Virginia State Police as authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
