Avonia Road — Pennsylvania Route 98 — is a north-south two-lane highway running through Fairview Township, connecting Interstate 90 approximately three miles to the south with the Lake Erie shoreline community of Avonia to the north. The 8700 block falls within the residential and agricultural central portion of the township. The road passes through a corridor that includes wooded stretches, rolling terrain, and sections lined with guardrails along its more rural segments.
Fairview Township is situated on the southern shore of Lake Erie in Erie County, Pennsylvania, approximately 12 miles west of downtown Erie. The township covers approximately 29 square miles and had a population of approximately 11,100 as of the 2020 census. It is part of the Erie Metropolitan Statistical Area and is served by the Fairview School District. The township includes the communities of Fairview and Avonia, and is bordered by Lake Erie to the north, Girard Township to the west, and Millcreek Township to the northeast.
Erie County is the northernmost county in Pennsylvania, situated in the northwestern corner of the state along the southern shore of Lake Erie. The county seat is the City of Erie, which anchors the region as its commercial, medical, and cultural hub. Erie County had a population of approximately 269,000 as of the 2020 census. Interstate 90 runs east-west along the county’s southern edge, serving as the primary through-traffic corridor in the region and providing access to Avonia Road via an interchange approximately three miles south of Fairview’s center.
UPMC Hamot, where Stanford was pronounced dead, is a major regional medical center and trauma facility located in downtown Erie on State Street along Presque Isle Bay. It is part of the UPMC health system and serves as the primary Level II trauma center for Erie County and the broader northwest Pennsylvania region.
The Erie County Coroner’s Office investigates deaths that occur outside of a hospital or under sudden or unexpected circumstances. In fatal traffic crashes, the coroner’s office works alongside Pennsylvania State Police to determine cause and manner of death. PSP has not released information on whether speed or other factors are under review in connection with the Avonia Road crash.
Single-vehicle run-off-road crashes of the type that claimed Stanford’s life are among the most common categories of fatal motorcycle incidents. Road departure crashes — in which a rider loses control and leaves the traveled portion of the roadway — account for a significant share of motorcycle fatalities in Pennsylvania and nationally each year. Pennsylvania recorded over 180 motorcycle fatalities in a recent year, according to PennDOT, with single-vehicle crashes among the leading crash types. Erie County and the Lake Erie corridor in northwest Pennsylvania see significant motorcycle activity during warmer months given the scenic lakefront roads and rural routes that attract riders throughout the season.
