MOORPARK, CA. (THECOUNT) — Britney Spears was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of driving under the influence in the Ventura County community of Moorpark, California, according to law enforcement sources and Ventura County Sheriff’s Office records. Spears, 44, was released from custody early Thursday morning.
Remarkably, despite decades of intense public scrutiny and a series of well-documented personal struggles, this marks the first arrest for the singer, according to multiple law enforcement sources and national media reports.
The California Highway Patrol pulled Spears over at approximately 9:30 p.m. Wednesday after another driver called 911 reporting a vehicle being operated erratically, according to law enforcement sources. CHP officers initiated the DUI investigation following the stop. Spears was booked by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department at approximately 3:00 a.m. Thursday and released at approximately 6:00 a.m., according to jail records. Her vehicle was towed. She is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on May 4, 2026.
Moorpark is a city in eastern Ventura County, approximately 50 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Ventura County is a coastal county in Southern California, bordered by Los Angeles County to the southeast and Santa Barbara County to the northwest. The area is part of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.
A representative for Spears issued a statement Thursday. “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” the statement read. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.” The statement noted that Spears’ sons, Sean Preston Federline and Jayden James Federline — whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline — are going to be spending time with her, and that “her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”
Notably, this marks the first time Spears has been arrested, according to multiple reports. She has, however, faced prior legal troubles. In 2007, Spears was charged with misdemeanor hit-and-run after an incident involving a parked car in Los Angeles. Those charges were ultimately dismissed after she paid the owner for damages, according to reports. A mistrial was also declared in a related case after a jury deadlocked on a charge of driving without a valid license. Later that same year, Spears lost custody of her two sons amid concerns about her personal conduct, according to court records from the period.
The Wednesday arrest comes weeks after Spears was granted a permanent restraining order against a 51-year-old Louisiana man who had been harassing her online since 2013 and was arrested for trespassing at her Southern California home in 2025, according to court filings obtained by multiple outlets.
Spears, a native of McComb, Mississippi, rose to global fame in 1998 with the release of her debut single “…Baby One More Time” and is widely regarded as one of the best-selling music artists in history. She is often referred to as the “Princess of Pop” and has earned multiple Grammy Awards, including Best Dance Recording in 2004 for her hit “Toxic.” Her most recent studio album, “Glory,” was released in 2016. She last performed live in the United States in 2018, closing out her “Piece of Me” tour at the Formula One Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.
Spears spent 13 years under a court-ordered conservatorship that gave her father, Jamie Spears, control over her personal and financial affairs beginning in February 2008. The arrangement was terminated by a Los Angeles judge in November 2021 following years of public and legal pressure. In the years since, Spears has largely kept a low public profile. She recently sold the rights to her music catalog to publisher Primary Wave for approximately $200 million, according to multiple reports.
Following news of her arrest, Spears deactivated her Instagram account early Thursday morning, according to multiple reports. The California Highway Patrol has been contacted for further comment.
