Puerto Vallarta Tourists Urged to Shelter In Place As Wide-Spread Cartel Violence Erupts Sunday

PUERTO VALLARTA, MÉXICO. (THECOUNT)Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes has been reported killed during a military operation in the Mexican state of Jalisco. The 53-year-old leader of Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and one of the world’s most powerful and violent drug lords, was killed Sunday during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, officials confirmed. The raid has sparked widespread violence and unrest across multiple states in Mexico.

Tourists and residents in Puerto Vallarta, one of Mexico’s largest Pacific resort cities, were warned to shelter in place Sunday after violent attacks erupted across Jalisco following the death of notorious drug lord Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, officials confirmed. The 53-year-old leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) was killed during a Mexican army operation in Tapalpa earlier in the day.

Authorities reported that cartel gunmen immediately retaliated after the raid, setting vehicles on fire, erecting barricades, and attacking key locations in Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Colima, Aguascalientes, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz. The chaos forced hotels in Puerto Vallarta to advise tourists to remain indoors while local businesses shuttered amid rising violence. Smoke from burning vehicles and barricades was visible in multiple areas.

The U.S. State Department issued an urgent alert, advising American citizens in the region to shelter in place. Several U.S. tourists confirmed being trapped in affected areas as streets were blocked and roads became unsafe. Air Canada also canceled flights to Puerto Vallarta, citing ongoing security concerns.

Guadalajara International Airport, Mexico’s third-busiest airport handling nearly 19 million travelers annually, was also targeted by cartel gunmen. Video posted online showed travelers fleeing terminals as gunfire erupted, according to news outlet Guardia Nocturna. Authorities urged travelers to avoid the airport and remain vigilant.

Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro declared much of the state under a “code red,” warning residents to stay inside as federal forces responded to widespread attacks. “The clashes are occurring in several federal entities,” Navarro said on X. “We reiterate the recommendation to avoid leaving your homes.”

The violence followed the death of Oseguera Cervantes, a former municipal police officer who dropped out of sixth grade and became one of the world’s most feared drug lords. He had built CJNG into a criminal powerhouse following the arrest and conviction of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Mexican defense officials confirmed that federal forces killed Oseguera and at least four other alleged cartel members during the Tapalpa operation. Three additional cartel members died during air transport to Mexico City.

Officials said the attacks across multiple states were coordinated attempts by cartel members to disrupt law enforcement operations and demonstrate continued control over their territories. Merchants in Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Colima, and Aguascalientes closed their shops, while citizens were advised to avoid public areas until authorities restored order.

Federal authorities have deployed additional military personnel to Jalisco and surrounding states. Investigators are reviewing the movements and communications of Oseguera Cervantes leading up to the raid to determine how the operation was planned and executed. Despite his death, analysts warn that CJNG remains a well-armed and organized criminal network.

Oseguera Cervantes had been targeted by the U.S., which offered a $15 million reward for information leading to his capture, and President Donald Trump previously designated CJNG as an international terrorist organization. His death marks a significant blow to the cartel but has triggered immediate unrest that threatens the safety of both locals and foreign visitors.

Authorities are urging residents and visitors in affected areas to stay indoors, avoid non-essential travel, and report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement. The situation remains fluid as federal forces work to contain the violence and restore public safety.
