MALIBU, CA (THECOUNT) — Hunter Langley has been identified as the 16-year-old boy who was killed Wednesday morning after a Tesla went over the side of Malibu Canyon Road, according to officials.
The crash was reported at approximately 7:40 a.m. Wednesday just north of Potter Drive, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. First responders arrived at the scene after reports that a vehicle had gone over the side of the roadway along the canyon route.
The California Highway Patrol confirmed the vehicle involved was a 2018 Tesla Model S. Langley was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to authorities.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later identified the victim as Hunter Langley, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Langley was a student/ athlete at Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth. Following confirmation of his death, the school canceled all athletic events scheduled for Wednesday, including the final of the Mission League boys’ basketball tournament against Notre Dame.
Langley was a varsity member of the Sierra Canyon Trailblazers football program. School officials acknowledged his involvement in school athletics when announcing the cancellation of events for the day.
Malibu Canyon Road is a well-traveled route that connects the Pacific Coast Highway to the San Fernando Valley and is known for its steep grades, winding turns, and canyon drop-offs. The section near Potter Drive where the crash occurred is part of a two-lane canyon roadway frequently used by commuters, residents, and school traffic traveling between Malibu and the Valley communities.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel and California Highway Patrol officers worked the scene Wednesday morning. Traffic in the area was impacted as emergency crews responded and investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding what caused the Tesla to leave the roadway. The incident remains under active investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
Sierra Canyon School is a private college preparatory school located in Chatsworth in the west San Fernando Valley. The school serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade and competes in interscholastic athletics under the name Sierra Canyon Trailblazers in the CIF Southern Section. The cancellation of athletic events Wednesday reflected the immediate impact of the tragedy on the school community.
The Medical Examiner’s identification of Langley confirmed his age as 16. Officials have not released any further personal details.
Malibu Canyon Road has been the site of numerous serious traffic collisions over the years due to its geography and roadway design. The canyon corridor features elevation changes, limited shoulders, and steep embankments in multiple locations. Law enforcement agencies regularly patrol the area due to its history of traffic incidents.
Wednesday’s crash prompted a multi-agency response involving Los Angeles County Fire Department units and California Highway Patrol investigators. Fire personnel accessed the vehicle down the embankment while CHP officers secured the roadway above.
No other injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
Authorities have not stated whether speed, road conditions, or mechanical factors contributed to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
