Palm Springs, CA (THECOUNT) — Demond Wilson, best known for playing Lamont Sanford on the NBC sitcom “Sanford and Son,” has died at his home in Palm Springs, California, his son confirmed Friday.
Wilson Jr. told TMZ that his father passed following a battle with cancer. He did not disclose what type of cancer his father had or when he was diagnosed. “I love him. He was a great man,” Wilson Jr. said while paying tribute to his father.
Demond Wilson rose to fame in the early 1970s when he starred alongside Redd Foxx on the groundbreaking sitcom “Sanford and Son,” which aired on NBC from 1972 to 1977. The show earned recognition for breaking racial barriers on television, portraying an African American family in a comedic but realistic way. In his 2009 autobiography, Wilson reflected, “Redd and I were making history back in those days. We were the first Blacks to be on television in that capacity and we opened the door for all those other shows that came after us.”
After “Sanford and Son” ended, Wilson continued acting, taking on the role of Raymond Ellis in the series “Baby… I’m Back!” He played the role for one season before appearing in ABC’s “The New Odd Couple” in 1982. Wilson later transitioned to film, including a role in the 1993 comedy “Me and the Kid.”
Following a nearly two-decade break from acting, Wilson returned for a final role in 2023, starring in the drama “Eleanor’s Bench.”
Wilson’s contributions extended beyond the entertainment industry. He was a Vietnam War veteran who served in the U.S. Army and became an ordained Christian minister in the 1980s. He established the Restoration House of America, a ministry dedicated to helping former inmates reintegrate into society. He also authored a memoir and several Christian-themed books, sharing his faith and life experiences with readers.
Wilson married former model Cicely Johnston in 1974. The couple focused much of their lives on faith and family, raising six children together. Johnston and Wilson remained married until his passing.
Fans and fellow actors shared tributes to Wilson’s legacy. On social media platform X, one fan wrote, “RIP Demond Wilson. My parents were pretty insistent on a 10 PM bed time when I was a kid, but they always let me make an exception for ‘Sanford and Son’ when it came on WPHL at 10. Always worth it.”
Wilson’s career is remembered not only for his comedic talent but for the barriers he helped break on television and his contributions to social and faith-based initiatives. His portrayal of Lamont Sanford remains iconic, and his influence on television history continues to be acknowledged by fans, colleagues, and scholars of American pop culture.
Wilson is survived by his wife Cicely Johnston and their six children. No public details regarding funeral arrangements have been released as of Friday.
