DURHAM, NC. (THECOUNT) — Jordon Jones, 22, of Durham, and Kymarion Williams, 20, also of Durham, were killed Tuesday afternoon after a violent single-vehicle crash that followed an alleged hit-and-run incident in North Durham, according to the Durham Police Department. Jones was driving the vehicle involved in both incidents, police said.
Authorities say the chain of events began around 5 p.m. on Hebron Road, where a 2015 Ford Explorer driven by Jones allegedly struck another vehicle. Instead of stopping, Jones reportedly fled the scene, prompting what police describe as a short but dangerous sequence of events that ended minutes later on Denfield Street.
According to a Durham Police Department news release, Jones was traveling in the 4700 block of Denfield Street when he crossed into the opposite lane of traffic, ran off the left side of the roadway, and slammed into a tree. Investigators say the Explorer was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash.
Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. Williams, who was seated in the rear passenger area of the vehicle, also died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, police confirmed.
Two additional passengers were inside the Ford Explorer at the time of the collision. A 25-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Their names have not been released, and their current conditions have not been disclosed.
Police have not confirmed whether anyone was injured during the initial hit-and-run collision on Hebron Road. As of Wednesday morning, the Durham Police Department had not provided further details regarding the vehicle that was struck or whether that driver or passengers required medical treatment.
Investigators emphasized that excessive speed appears to have been a significant factor in the fatal crash on Denfield Street. Authorities are continuing to reconstruct the sequence of events to determine exactly how the vehicle left the roadway and whether any additional factors contributed to the deadly outcome.
The Durham Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the hit-and-run on Hebron Road or the subsequent crash on Denfield Street to come forward. Investigators are particularly interested in speaking with drivers who were traveling in the area around the time of the incidents and may have dashcam footage.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Investigator A. Roberts at 919-560-4935, extension 29410. Tips can be provided directly to police and may assist in clarifying the circumstances surrounding both crashes.
Hebron Road and Denfield Street are located in North Durham, an area that includes a mix of residential streets and connecting roadways. Police continue to emphasize the importance of remaining at the scene following a collision and driving at safe speeds.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details are expected to be released as police continue their work.
