Ryan Wedding: Snowboarder Turned Drug Kingpin Captured

MEXICO. (THECOUNT) — Former Canadian Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding has been arrested in Mexico on January 23, 2026, following an international manhunt that spanned multiple countries, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the capture. Wedding, once a member of Team Canada at the 2002 Winter Olympics, had been listed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list and carried a reward of up to $15 million for information leading to his arrest.

Wedding was indicted in the United States on charges including running a criminal enterprise, large-scale cocaine trafficking, and murder. Federal prosecutors allege the operation extended across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Colombia, making it one of the most expansive drug trafficking cases tied to a former professional athlete.

Authorities have accused Wedding of overseeing a cocaine distribution network responsible for generating more than $1 billion annually in illegal proceeds. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi previously stated that the organization was not only involved in narcotics trafficking but also violence used to maintain control of drug routes and eliminate perceived threats. Investigators say Wedding allegedly ordered murders, including directing the killing of a witness connected to a U.S. government case against him.

According to court documents, Wedding used several aliases, including “El Jefe,” “Giant,” and “Public Enemy.” Prosecutors allege he enlisted assassins to carry out targeted killings of rival traffickers and individuals believed to be cooperating with law enforcement. The FBI has described Wedding as a central figure in a sophisticated criminal enterprise with cartel-level resources.

For several years, authorities believed Wedding was hiding in Mexico under the protection of the Sinaloa cartel. His location remained unknown despite coordinated efforts between U.S., Canadian, and Mexican law enforcement agencies. Details surrounding the exact circumstances and location of his arrest have not yet been publicly released, though officials confirmed he is now in custody.

Wedding’s criminal case stands in stark contrast to his earlier public life. Competing for Team Canada, he participated in the men’s parallel giant slalom snowboarding event at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, where he finished 24th overall. At the time, Wedding was considered a promising athlete, though his Olympic performance did not lead to a sustained professional snowboarding career.

Federal filings indicate Wedding’s alleged criminal activities began around 2008, approximately six years after his Olympic appearance. Investigators say that following his departure from competitive sports, he became involved in organized crime and rapidly ascended into a leadership role within international drug trafficking networks.

FBI Director Kash Patel has publicly compared Wedding to notorious cartel leaders such as Pablo Escobar and Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, citing the scale of the alleged operation and the level of violence tied to it. Prosecutors argue that Wedding’s case underscores how individuals with legitimate public profiles can later become deeply embedded in transnational criminal organizations.

Wedding’s arrest was first reported by NBC News and later confirmed by CNN. Court proceedings are expected to follow, with potential extradition hearings depending on where he is currently being held. Federal authorities have not yet announced a timeline for his initial court appearance or whether additional charges may be filed.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials say further details will be released as the case progresses.
