COLLEGE STATION, TX. (THECOUNT.COM) — Terrance “Chet” Brooks, 60, the former Texas A&M safety who helped lead the Aggies to three consecutive Southwest Conference championships and later won two Super Bowl titles with the San Francisco 49ers, has died following a battle with cancer.
Texas A&M University confirmed Brooks’ passing, noting that he was a four-year letterman who played from 1984 to 1987. During his time with the Aggies, Brooks helped popularize the nickname “Wrecking Crew” for the university’s defense, which became synonymous with Texas A&M football throughout the 1980s.
Brooks earned All-Southwest Conference honors during his collegiate career and was later inducted into the Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011, recognizing his contributions to the program and his performance on the field.
Following his college career, Brooks was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the 11th round of the 1988 NFL Draft. He played three seasons in the NFL, appearing in 33 games and starting 23 during his career, including 15 starts in 1989. He recorded three interceptions during the 1989 regular season and made two key interceptions during the postseason, including a third-quarter pick of a John Elway pass in Super Bowl XXIV, returning it 38 yards. Brooks also recovered a fumble during the first quarter of that Super Bowl, which contributed to the 49ers’ 55-10 victory over the Denver Broncos.
Brooks was born on Jan. 1, 1966, in Midland, Texas, and attended Carter High School in Dallas before attending Texas A&M. His collegiate and professional accomplishments left a lasting impact on both the Aggies program and the San Francisco 49ers franchise.
Texas A&M released a statement mourning Brooks’ passing, highlighting his leadership, athletic achievements, and influence on teammates and the university’s football legacy. Brooks’ nickname, “Chet,” and his association with the “Wrecking Crew” defense remain a significant part of Texas A&M football history.
Brooks’ family and former teammates have not yet released additional statements. Details regarding funeral arrangements or memorial services have not been disclosed as of this time.
The football community, particularly fans of Texas A&M and the 49ers, continue to honor Brooks’ contributions to the sport and his role in memorable Super Bowl moments and collegiate championships.
Terrance “Chet” Brooks is survived by his family and remains remembered for both his professional accomplishments and his influence on the defensive identity of Texas A&M football and his contributions to the 49ers’ Super Bowl success.
