Actor T.K. Carter Found Dead Friday In California Home

DUARTE, CA. (THECOUNT.COM) — T.K. Carter, the veteran actor best known for his role as Nauls in John Carpenter’s 1982 horror and science fiction classic “The Thing,” has died at the age of 69, according to multiple national reports.

Law enforcement sources confirmed that Carter was found deceased Friday at his residence in Duarte, California, a city located in Los Angeles County in Southern California. Authorities said a call for service was received at approximately 5:42 p.m., after which a death report was made. Officials stated that no foul play is suspected in his death.

The cause of death has not been publicly released.

Carter’s death was first reported by TMZ, which cited law enforcement officials familiar with the incident. As of this writing, no additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding his passing have been disclosed by authorities.

Born in the United States, T.K. Carter built a career in film and television that spanned nearly five decades, beginning in the mid-1970s. He became widely recognized for his performance as Nauls, the chef and mechanic stationed at the Antarctic research outpost in “The Thing,” a film that has since become a cult classic and a landmark of the horror and science fiction genres.

Directed by John Carpenter and set in Antarctica, “The Thing” followed a group of American researchers who encounter a shape-shifting extraterrestrial organism. Although the film received mixed reviews upon its initial release, it later gained critical acclaim and is now frequently cited among the greatest horror films ever made.

Beyond “The Thing,” Carter appeared in a number of notable motion pictures across several decades. His film credits include the 1985 action thriller “Runaway Train,” the 1996 sports comedy “Space Jam,” and the 2005 crime drama “Domino.” His work reflected a career marked by versatility across multiple genres.

In addition to his film roles, Carter maintained a consistent presence on television. He portrayed the character Mike Fulton in more than two dozen episodes of the popular 1980s sitcom “Punky Brewster.” During the 1990s, he appeared as T-Bone on “The Steve Harvey Show,” further cementing his status as a recognizable face in American television.

Carter also starred in the 2000 HBO miniseries “The Corner,” a critically acclaimed production examining life in an inner-city neighborhood affected by drug addiction. In an August 2025 appearance on the program “Live from the Green Room,” Carter reflected on the challenges he faced securing an audition for the series, stating that he was ultimately able to audition through the assistance of a close friend and their manager.

More recently, Carter continued acting into the 2020s. His final on-screen appearances included three episodes of “The Company You Keep” and five episodes of the FX comedy series “Dave,” created by rapper and actor Lil Dicky, both of which aired in 2023.

Carter’s death marks the loss of an actor whose career bridged classic Hollywood filmmaking and modern television, with performances that continue to resonate among fans of genre cinema and network television alike.
