NEWBURY, MA. (THECOUNT) — Police Sergeant Jeremy Cole, 43, of the Endicott College Police Department, tragically lost his life in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 95 early Thanksgiving morning. The incident occurred when a Tesla, traveling southbound in the northbound lanes, collided head-on with Cole’s Chevrolet Trailblazer near mile marker 81 in Newbury.
Massachusetts State Police reported that the wrong-way vehicle was first observed in the Newburyport area shortly after midnight. Efforts were underway to deploy a tire-deflation device in Georgetown to stop the Tesla, but it struck Cole’s vehicle before reaching the device. Cole, who was returning home after working an evening shift, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Endicott College and law enforcement colleagues mourn the loss.
Endicott College Chief of Police Kerry Ramsdell expressed deep sorrow over Cole’s death, stating, “On this Thanksgiving Day, our hearts are with the family, friends, and loved ones of a police officer who reported for duty keeping the rest of us safe and secure but did not return home. This is an incredibly difficult time for our department. We are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss.”
Cole was a valued member of the Endicott College community and law enforcement family. Known for his dedication, kindness, and commitment to service, he had worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of students, staff, and the surrounding community. Tributes have poured in from colleagues, friends, and community members who praised his selflessness and professionalism.
The Tesla driver sustained serious injuries and faces charges.
The Tesla driver, identified as a man in his 40s, was seriously injured in the collision and was airlifted to a local hospital. Authorities have not yet released his name but confirmed that charges are pending as the investigation continues. Massachusetts State Police have not disclosed details about what caused the driver to travel in the wrong direction or whether impairment was a factor.
First responders closed the highway in both directions at the crash site to facilitate rescue efforts and investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Massachusetts State Police are leading the investigation, which remains ongoing.
Communities reflect on the tragic loss.
The loss of Sergeant Cole has cast a somber tone over the holiday, with many expressing grief and solidarity with his family and colleagues. “Jeremy was a beacon of professionalism and compassion,” one colleague shared. “He dedicated his life to protecting others, and his absence leaves a void in our department and community.”
Cole is survived by his wife and two young children. Friends and neighbors have already begun organizing support for his family, highlighting the profound impact he had on those around him.
Wrong-way crashes prompt safety discussions.
As details of the crash emerge, the incident has reignited conversations about preventing wrong-way collisions, which remain a significant concern on highways nationwide. State officials have highlighted the importance of infrastructure measures like better signage, wrong-way detection systems, and tire-deflation devices, though their deployment and efficacy remain inconsistent.
The tragedy underscores the unpredictability and devastation of such incidents. Advocacy groups are calling for comprehensive reviews of road safety policies to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
