NEWTON, KS. (THECOUNT) — A 21-year-old Louisiana man tragically lost his life in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 135 in Newton, Kansas, on Sunday evening, according to authorities.
The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) reported that the crash occurred around 9:10 p.m. on the southbound side of I-135, approximately half a mile south of 1st Street. James Rundzieher of Rayville, Louisiana, was driving a GMC pickup truck when the vehicle veered off the roadway.
The truck broke through the guardrail, plunged off the interstate, and came to rest on the train tracks below. Emergency responders pronounced Rundzieher dead at the scene.
Officials said it remains unclear whether Rundzieher was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Investigators have not yet determined what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
Harvey County dispatch confirmed that crews responded to the scene just before 9:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a crash and vehicle fire in the vicinity of I-135 and 1st Street.
The incident prompted authorities to shut down the interstate in both directions. As of 10:40 p.m. on Sunday, crews were still working to clear the area. No other injuries were reported in connection with the crash.
While the exact cause of the collision remains under investigation, this tragic incident highlights the importance of road safety and adherence to seat belt regulations. Authorities urge all motorists to drive attentively and prioritize safety.
The Newton crash marks another somber reminder of the risks associated with highway travel.
