Massive 70-Foot Waves Expected Off Vancouver Island as Bomb Cyclone Approaches ‘7-Story Building’

VANCOUVER ISLAND, BC — The northwestern tip of Vancouver Island is bracing for a breathtaking oceanic phenomenon as a bomb cyclone generates towering waves and swells. These immense seas, driven by rapid intensification of the storm, could produce maximum wave heights of up to 70 feet, equivalent to a six-story building.

Oceanic Power: Swells vs. Waves:

Swells differ from choppy, wind-driven waves. They are long, smooth, and can travel thousands of kilometers, carrying storm energy far beyond the storm’s center. This system is set to send swells as far as Hawaii and Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, showcasing the far-reaching impact of its energy.

Near the storm’s low-pressure center, wind-driven waves combine with swells to create some of the tallest seas possible. The significant wave height, which averages the tallest one-third of waves, is forecasted to exceed 35 feet (10 meters) a few hundred kilometers off Vancouver Island’s coast. This metric suggests maximum waves could reach a staggering 70 feet (20 meters).

Wave Heights Along the Coast:

Closer to shore, waves will still pose a considerable threat:

West Coast of Vancouver Island: Waves are forecasted to range between 20 and 26 feet (6–8 meters), with potential peaks reaching 40 feet (12 meters).

Georgia Strait: Wave heights could reach 10 to 13 feet (3–4 meters), with northern sections experiencing maximum heights of up to 16 feet (5 meters).

These coastal waves, intensified by tidal cycles, could amplify their impacts on shorelines and infrastructure.

Hazards of the Swelling Seas:

This storm will not only be a visual spectacle but also poses significant dangers:

Mariners at Risk: Open seas near the storm’s center will be treacherous, with chaotic, towering waves creating navigation hazards.

Coastal Erosion: Powerful waves may erode beaches and cliffs, threatening property and reshaping the coastline.

Sneaker Waves: These dangerous, unpredictable surges can sweep inland suddenly, posing a risk to those near the shore.
The timing of the storm coincides with the high-tide cycle, further elevating risks:

Campbell River: High tide reaches 4.33 meters at 9:15 a.m. PST Wednesday.
Comox: High tide reaches 4.96 meters at 9:59 a.m. PST Wednesday.
Victoria: High tides of 2.79 and 2.9 meters occur at 9:15 a.m. PST and 2 p.m. PST Wednesday.

Safety Precautions for Storm Watching:

While this event will undoubtedly attract storm watchers, experts urge extreme caution. High winds and unpredictable waves make coastal areas especially dangerous. Visitors are advised to stay far back from the water’s edge, as sneaker waves and tidal surges could have deadly consequences.

A Rare Oceanic Event:

The potential for 70-foot waves makes this bomb cyclone one of the most powerful oceanic events in recent memory near Vancouver Island. As its effects ripple across the Pacific, it underscores the immense and unpredictable power of nature.
