VENICE, IT. (THECOUNT) — Davide Rebellin hit-and-run Venice: Davide Rebellin, former Italian cycling champion, has died at the age of 51 after a hit-and-run collision involving a truck in northern Italy.

Rebellin died instantly in a collision with a large truck that then fled the scene. He was on a training ride near Montebello Vicentino when he was hit by a “heavy truck” that was exiting a nearby motorway junction.

One of the greatest classic racers of his generation, Rebellin won seven of cycling’s major one-day races.

In 2004, he became the first rider to dominate the high register of the Ardennes Classics of Liege, Bastogne, Liege, Flèche Walloon and Amstel Gold.

He also won the Fresh in 2007 and 2009 and also won the San Sebastian and Zurich Classics in 1997.
