Hit-And-Run Driver Arrested In Fatal Crash That Killed Cleveland Firefighter Johnny Tetrick

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH. (THECOUNT) — According to multiple online reports, the hit-and-run driver involved in a fatal Saturday night Cuyahoga County vehicle collision that killed veteran firefighter, Johnny Tetrick, has been arrested.

Tetrick, 51, was struck and killed while responding to a motor vehicle crash on Interstate 90 near Martin Luther King Junior Drive in Cleveland in around 8:15 p.m. Saturday night, city officials confirmed.

Tetrick, a 27-year veteran of the Cleveland Division of Fire, was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma injuries after being transported to an area hospital.

The driver who struck Tetrick fled the scene, but a suspect was located by Cleveland Police shortly after midnight and taken into custody by Bratenahl police officers in connection with aggravated vehicular homicide and failure to stop after an accident on public roads or highways.

Tetrick had served most of his career with Cleveland Firefighters Engine 22, which works on the East side of Cleveland.

“I am saddened to learn of the death of Cleveland firefighter Johnny Tetrick and extend my sincere condolences to his family, friends, and fellow firefighters,” said Mayor Justin M. Bibb in a statement. “Firefighter Tetrick was a professional and dedicated first responder and a much-loved member of his family and his community. Please keep all of them in your thoughts and prayers.”

Tetrick is survived by his family, which includes three children.

According to the city’s news release, flags on city buildings will be lowered to half-staff in his memory. Further announcements regarding funeral services are expected in the near future.
