ST FRANCIS COUNTY, MO. (THECOUNT) — Lane Burns, a Bonne Terre Police Department Officer, has been identified as the victim in a fatal shooting Thursday in St. Francis County.

Burns, 30, was killed in the line of duty early Thursday morning in Bonne Terre.

According to reports, Burns was responding to a disturbance call at the Motel 6 on Highway K in Bonne Terre around midnight Thursday, when a suspect opened fire, striking Burns and 28-year-old BTPD Corporal Garrett Worley.

Worley was transported to an area hospital after suffering an apparent gunshot wound to the leg.

Burns was also transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounce dead of gunshot injuries.

The suspect, later identified as 21-year-old James Emery, was killed after officers returned fire.

Officer Burns served the Bonne Terre Police Department for approximately five years. He leaves behind a 9-year-old daughter.
