Longtime KTVU News Director Fred Zehnder ID’d As Pedestrian Killed In Sunday DUI Vehicle Strike

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA. (THECOUNT) — Fred Zehnder, longtime Bay Area TV news director, has been identified as the pedestrian struck and killed by a suspected DUI driver in Alameda, California, Sunday night.

Former KTVU co-workers identified the accomplished TV news executive as the victim in a fatal vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision near Alameda Sunday night.

According to reports, Zehnder was on-foot in the area of Walnut Street and Lincoln Avenue in Alameda when he was struck by a vehicle. He was discovered by police laying in the road around 10 p.m. Sunday.

Zehnder was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma injuries at the scene.

Zehnder worked at the station as news director from 1975 to 1999.

The unidentified suspect driver remained on-scene and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

A five-time Emmy Award winner and National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Governor’s Award recipient, Zehnder also had stints at KPIX, KOVR and KGO before becoming the KTVU’s News Director, according to CBS.

After retiring from KTVU in 1999, Zehnder continued working in the print news business, having founded the San Leandro Times and later buying the Castro Valley Forum.
