COOK COUNTY, IL. (THECOUNT) — James Thompson, Illinois’ longest-serving governor, passed away Friday night. He was 84.

Thompson, who served as governor of Illinois from January 1977 to January 1991, died Friday, according to Saturday morning reports.

Reports say, Chicago police officers responded to a location and were informed that an 84-year-old male had died. On arrival, officials pronounced Thompson dead of natural causes.

Gov. Thompson served as the state’s governor a total of 14 years.
