SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA. (THECOUNT) — Tamario Smith, of Santa Cruz, has been identified as the inmate found dead in his jail cell in Santa Cruz County Sunday night.

‘Mario’ Smith, 21, was found dead while inside a cell at the Santa Cruz jail on Sunday night.

According to Santa Cruz County correctional officers, Smith was discovered dead in his cell Sunday evening around 6 p.m. Although measures were taken to resuscitate him, Smith was pronounced dead of unknown causes, the sheriff’s office said.

Smith was the sole occupant of the cell and he showed no visible signs of injury or trauma.

Smith did not display symptoms associated with the new coronavirus, say officials.

Foul play is not suspected.

Smith was arrested in January on suspicion of domestic violence-related charges, the sheriff’s office said.

A cause of death was not provided.
