MACOUPIN COUNTY, IL. (THECOUNT) — Colby Rheude, of Virden, Illinois, has been identified as the victim in a fatal Wednesday head-on vehicle crash in Macoupin County.
Rheude, 18, was killed in a crash near Girard Twp. on Wednesday afternoon involving an 18-wheeler.
According to Illinois State Police, Rheude was operating a vehicle traveling on Route 4 near Finney Road in Girard Township, when he came into head-on contact with a semi-tractor, operated by 51-year-old Walter Smith, that had crossed centerlines for unknown reasons around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Rheude was pronounced dead at the scene of blunt force trauma injuries.
Smith was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
