RAMSEY COUNTY, MN. (THECOUNT) — Kevin Chad Vereecke, of Saint Paul, Minnesota, has been identified as the suspect in a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run vehicle strike on Tuesday.
Vereecke, 46, is accused of impaired driving after a vehicle he was operating struck and killed Minneapolis man, 61-year-old Russell William Bangert Tuesday afternoon in St. Paul.
According to St. Paul officials, officers responded to a report of a fatal hit-and-run vehicle crash involving a pedestrian around 4:45 p.m. on the 600 block of Vandalia Street. When first responders arrived, Bangert was found suffering from blunt force trauma injuries. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later located Vereecke’s vehicle displaying incriminating damage based on surveillance video near the scene of the deadly crash.
Vereecke was taken into custody at his residence near Myrtle Avenue and Vandalia Street. He was booked into Ramsey County Jail on probable cause criminal vehicular operation. Other charges are likely forthcoming.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
