GARDENDALE, AL. (THECOUNT) — Dustin Cody Martin has been identified as the suspect arrested Friday in the hit-and-run crash that killed kindergartner Kamerynn Young and critically wounded her father Elijah on Wednesday.
Martin, 28, is charged with reckless murder and first-degree assault. The warrants were obtained shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, according to officials.

According to reports, Martin has a laundry list of traffic violations. His driver’s license was suspended in 2019. At the time of his arrest, he had at least four outstanding misdemeanor warrants from several cities in Jefferson County and beyond.
Birmingham police had issued a BOLO for a white Ford Dually pickup truck by a neighboring police agency because the truck was driving erratically.
Martin was taken into custody shortly after 8:30 p.m. at the Flying J on Daniel Payne Drive. He was taken to Birmingham police headquarters for questioning, reports AL.
He was also charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and public intoxication but those charges were dismissed. In 2010, he pleaded guilty to improper passing on Fieldstown Road.
His bond is set at $450,000.
