LAPLACE, LA. (THECOUNT) — Medford Auguste, of LaPlace, Louisiana, has been identified as the pedestrian fatally struck in a hit-and-run in LaPlace overnight.

‘Mama Pete’ Auguste, 72, was killed Saturday night as she attempted to cross Airline Highway, according to Louisiana State Police. The driver then fled the scene.

According to police, Auguste was on-foot in the area of East Airline Highway and Windsor Street, when she was struck and killed around 8 p.m. Saturday by a hit-and-run driver operating a Dodge Ram pickup truck. That driver was later apprehended and identified as 47-year-old Lobo Santos.

Auguste was pronounced dead at the scene of multiple blunt force trauma injuries.

It is unknown if Auguste was impaired at the time of the crash. Toxicology tests are pending.

Santos was booked into the St. John Corrections Center for Operating a Motor Vehicle Without a Driver’s License and Hit and Run. Impairment is also suspected to be a factor on part of Santos and charges may be forthcoming, reports Fox8.

The cause of the fatal incident remains under investigation.
