Divine Heresy Dino Cazares took to Facebook to comment on Payne’s death:

Our Metal brother Joseph Payne has passed away. Another one gone way to young, he was 35 years old. I wasn’t going to say anything until I got confirmation from his family, which I now did. At this time no cause of death has been revealed.

Payne toured, played bass and sang backing vocals for Nile between 2005 and 2007. He then stepped in to Divine Heresy’s lineup as the bassist in 2007 and remained with the group through 2011. His other credits include the bands Domination Through Impurity, Pain After Death, Strains, Lust of Decay and A Sudden Fear, reports LoudWire.

Payne quit Divine Heresy in January 2011, explaining in a statement that “[his] passion for this project [had] been insufficient for quite sometime now.”

In 2012, Payne was arrested in connection with an investigation into the distribution of more than 2,900 grams of marijuana in Iredell County, North Carolina.

A cause of Death was not provided as of Sunday morning.
