KERMAN, IRAN. (THECOUNT) — At least 40 people have died in a stampede that erupted at a funeral procession for Iranian general, Qassem Soleimani on Tuesday.
A funeral procession for Soleimani, who was killed at 62 in a U.S. airstrike last week, killed at least 40 people and injured 200 others, state television reported. It is unclear what prompted the panic.
According to the report, the stampede took place in Kerman, the hometown of Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani, as the procession got underway. Initial videos posted online showed people lying lifeless on a road, others shouting and trying to give help them, reports WPTV.
Iranian state TV gave the casualty toll in its online report, without saying where it obtained the information.
