HOUSTON, TX. (THECOUNT) — A Houston mother was shot and killed while she celebrated the new year in her front yard by what authorities believe was celebratory gunfire.

According to Houston Police, the family was ringing in the new year in the front yard lighting fireworks, when a 61-year-old woman was fatally shot in the neck.

The deadly indecent occurred just after midnight on Laurel Oaks Dr & May Laurel Dr, located in north Harris County.

Officials said they found the woman with a gunshot wound to her neck.

The woman, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene of gunshot injuries.

Deputies said they believe the bullet came from celebratory gunfire, reports Click2Houston.

“We walked the streets and canvassed up and down to see if we can find any shell casings or anything in the neighborhood and are not finding anything,” authorities said.

Officials are still working to determine where the gunfire came from.
