TORONTO, CAN. (THECOUNT) — A series of offshore British Columbia earthquakes have some Canadian residents on edge this week.
Over the last 3 days, at least nine noteable shakers have struck the B.C. coast on the same fault – In the same area – Near Port Hardy, Canada.
What’s more concerning – The tumblers seem to be progressing in size and frequency.
A magnitude 5.3 and a 5.7 struck the area on Dec 23, followed by a pair of 6.0 quakes and a 4.7 – all on the same day. Then, on Christmas day, the area was struck by the largest yet, a sizely magnitude 6.3. followed by several smaller quakes.
The 4.9-magnitude earthquake is the latest in a recent cluster, and occurred 198 kilometres west of Port Hardy, B.C. just after 12:30 p.m. PST on Christmas Day, reports CTVNews.
A smaller earthquake measuring 3.6-magnitude was recorded in waters 153 kilometres west of Post Alice, B.C., at 8: 25 a.m. PST earlier Dec 25th.
The previous reported 6.2-magnitude Christmas day earthquake was upgraded to a 6.3 in the hours to follow.
All three recent earthquakes were registered at a depth of five kilometres, according to Earthquakes Canada.
In a bulletin, the agency stated that a tsunami isn’t expected and no reports of damage have been made with any of the current seismic activity.
A total of six earthquakes rattled off the B.C. coast on Monday alone.
