HALIFAX COUNTY, VA. (THECOUNT) — Former state trooper, Philip Leath, and his wife, Lori Leath, were found shot dead on Christmas Eve, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say Philip, 44, and Lori, 37, were found dead on a highway in front of a Bellevue Road home near South Boston, shortly after police received a call of shots fired around 9:30 a.m.

Both victims died of apparent gunshot wounds, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities say the shooting appears to be a domestic incident, reports WSLS.

Officials stopped short of calling the deadly incident a murder-suicide.

Officials said they recovered a weapon at the scene.

The bodies were transported to the state medical examiner’s office in Roanoke for autopsies.

This incident is under investigation. The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office worked with the South Boston Police Department, Virginia State Police and Virginia Department of Transportation.
