BOONE, IA. (THECOUNT) — First responders are on the scene of a major a train derailment in Boone, Iowa, on Saturday evening, according to local reports.
At approximately 6 p.m., the train derailed near Hy-Vee. An estimated nine cars were seen derailed from the track. The car then spilled into a Union Pacific parking lot.
Boone Fire Chief Justin Adams said the derailment caused damage to several vehicles in the Union Pacific parking lot, reports KCCI.
Adams said there is a natural gas smell in the area, but the cause is unknown. Hy-Vee, Dollar General and O’Riley’s Auto Parts were evacuated. Adams said more surrounding areas might be evacuated.
