Mother Speaks Out After Son Shot Dead At TX A&M Homecoming Party On 23rd Birthday ‘My Baby Is Gone’

GREENVILLE, TX. (THECOUNT) — The second fatality in a shooting at an unsanctioned Texas A&M University-Commerce Homecoming party Saturday night west of Greenville has been identified by family members as Byron Craven Jr, according to Monday morning reports.

Craven, who was celebrating his 23rd birthday, was gunned down while attending the party with his cousin in a shooting that also took the life of 23-year-old Kevin Berry. Berry was a father of two from Dallas with a reported third child “on the way,” said Monday reports.

The mother of Craven confirmed that her son was one of the two killed in the shooting at the party that also injured six others. The other injuries were said sustained by panicied partygoers as they fled the scene of the double-fatal shooting.

Craven’s mother confirmed on Facebook that her son was one of those killed, saying “yes my baby is gone.”

“I have never dealt with anything like this,” Craven’s mother said. “He died on [his] 23rd birthday. He just wanted to have fun. I seen my baby leave with his suitcase. And now I have his suitcase but not him,” reported HeraldBanner on Monday morning.

Deputies responded to the party following a complaint of parking on the shoulder of Highway 380.

Texas A&M Commerce has more than 12,000 students and it’s officially homecoming weekend.

Deputies say approximately 750 people were at the party when they arrived and gunshots erupted 15 minutes later. The deputies say they didn’t see the shooter at the time because of the mass exodus and they didn’t fire their weapons

Greenville is just northeast of Dallas and an 18 minute drive to campus, reports ABC13.

The Texas Rangers and the FBI are investigating. The shooter hasn’t been identified and is still on the run. Authorities haven’t named a motive.

Anyone with possible information on the deadly incident should contact police at 911.
