Tuskegee U Student Nyra ‘Reneé’ Shaw-Hemphill ID’d As Woman Who Died On Campus Thursday

TUSKEGEE, AL. (THECOUNT) — Nyra Shaw-Hemphill, from Cincinnati, Ohio, has been identified as the sophomore student who collapsed and later died while on the campus of the Tuskegee University in Alabama Thursday, according to reports.

“Nyra Reneé” was immediately transported to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika where she was later pronounced dead.

A cause of death has not been provided by officials as of Sunday morning.

University president Lily McNair said Nyra Reneé was majoring in animal, poultry and veterinary science.

McNair said they have spoken to Shaw-Hemphill’s family and counselors from the university’s Wellness Center have been and will remain in contact with her roommates and other residents of the North Commons Apartments where she lived, reports WLWT.

A moment of silence was observed in Shaw-Hemphill’s memory on Friday and a similar moment of silence will be observed during Sunday’s All-University Worship Service, which starts at 9:30 a.m.

A memorial service will take place Wednesday at noon in Tuskegee.

McNair said they will announce funeral arrangements when they are provided by Shaw-Hemphill’s family.
