PITTSBURGH, PA. (THECOUNT) — Two people were stabbed near the Burlington Coat Factory on Sixth Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Police Chief Scott Schubert said an officer was checking on a woman, who appeared to be wearing Muslim garb and was sleeping at the bus stop, when suddenly a man came around the back of the officer and stabbed the woman. The man then turned around and stabbed another person, police said.

The officer immediately took the suspect down to the ground and took him into custody, then began to perform first aid on the woman, Schubert said.

The woman was taken to a hospital and was reported to be in critical condition.

Police and medics are responding to the scene in the 300 block of Sixth Avenue on reports of a stabbing, according to emergency dispatchers.

The names and conditions of the patients were not immediately available.

The incident was reported around 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Smithfield Street near the Burlington Coat Factory store.

Officials at the scene say at least one woman, possible two, who were wearing hijabs, a Muslim garment, were stabbed. One of the women was seriously injured, reports CBS.
