ST. LOUIS, MO. (THECOUNT) — Ashland Tate, the former executive director of a chapter of the children’s nonprofit Boys Hope Girls Hope, was fatally shot about 10 p.m. at the Stanford Place apartments on Raritan Drive in Rock Hill.
Tate, 35, headed the renowned academic boarding house program that is headquartered in St. Louis with chapters throughout the country and Latin America.
Two suspects have been charged with second-degree murder: Rayshaun McDonald, 25, who lives at the complex, and Themon Ryan, 32, of the 100 block of Merryfield Circle in St. Charles. Police and prosecutors have not said what lead to the shooting or whether the shooters knew Tate.
Tate was featured in a 2016 story in the Post-Dispatch when he took over as executive director of the local chapter in Richmond Heights, marking the first time an alumni who was taken in by the program as a child would lead any of its chapters, reports STLToday.
A motive in the fatal incident was not provided by officials.
