Before 6 p.m., officers responded to the block of 2200 Monterey Road on a report of “a suspicious male walking with a gun,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Vigil then fled the scene in a red Ford Mustang after the officers attempted to make contact with him, said police spokesman Lt. Jim Sokolik.

At some point, Vigil crashed the Mustang before several officers apprehended him on-foot near the Fountain Garden Apartments, 3165 E. Fountain Blvd. As officers attempted to again make contact, Vigil fatally shot.

Vigil was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead of gunshot injuries.

The police officers involved are on administrative leave while the Sheriff’s Office investigates the shooting, a standard protocol for police shootings, reports Gazette.
