PHOENIX, AZ. (THECOUNT) — Ella Thomas has been identified as the Phoenix, Arizona teenager killed in a crash involving a garbage truck on Sunday, according to Phoenix police.
Thomas, 14, was traveling as a passenger in a vehicle that ran a red light and collided with an AUTC waste management truck around 4:40 a.m. on Sunday.
The 16-year-old male driver of the 2013 Hyundai was traveling southbound on 51st Avenue and entered the intersection of Thunderbird Road on a red light when his vehicle collided with a 2008 AUTC garbage truck heading eastbound on a green light, reports AZCentral
Following the initial collision, the Hyundai and the truck became “entangled” and ensconced between two large trees.
The vehicles came to a resting point with the garbage truck tipped over on top of the Hyundai.
Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene of multiple blunt force trauma injuries.
The 50-year-old garbage truck driver was transported with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Hyundai driver and another 16-year-old passenger were transported to the hospital with serious injuries while two other passengers, a 14-year-old female and 15-year-old male, were transported with life-threatening injuries, as per AZCentral.
The driver of the Hyundai remains in stable condition.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
