BRONX, NY. (THECOUNT) — A little boy whose crazed mother, Shanice Martin, slashed his throat in April, has died Friday after collapsing at his Bronx school, officials said.
The 6-year-old child, whose name was not immediately disclosed, collapsed inside the PS 5 Port Morris School on Jackson Ave. about 11:30 a.m. Medics rushed him to Lincoln Hospital, where he died, reports NYDailyNews.
The child is the son of Martin, 24, who was arrested on April 27 for slashing the boy and his 2-year-old sister, police sources said.
Police say they observed a 6-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl with slashed throats at the intersection of Washington Avenue & Brook Avenue, in Bronx, NY, in the Melrose section on Saturday night.
Martin, 24, slashed her son “ear to ear,” reports ABC13.
Shortly after the children were taken to the hospital, their mother, Martin, walked into the police precinct covered in blood, and made statements about what she had done.
“She was a good mom, but I guess she was going through something,” said Martin’s brother, Travis Lango. “That’s not something that you do to your kids. I don’t care what’s going on with you, you can ask for help. She just took it upon herself to do what she wanted to do and it’s not good.”
Officials say Martin had a razor in her possession.
She was arrested and charged with assault, child abandonment, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of a weapon.
Martin is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation at an area hospital. Her family says she was living in and out of shelters with her two kids, and was upset on Saturday night when she could not get into one. She called her mother, but then an hour later, NYPD officers found the two kids in the street with slash wounds.
A cause of death for the boy was not provided by officials.
