TOPEKA, KS. (THECOUNT) – The Topeka Zoo will not euthanize Sanjiv, a Sumatran tiger, after an attack that left a female trainer with unknown critical injuries Saturday morning. The identity of the zookeeper was not provided by zoo officials.
Sanjiv reportedly attacked a female trainer while she was inside his enclosure. The zoo temporarily shuttered after the attack, but reopened later in the morning.
City of Topeka spokeswoman Molly Hadfield said they are still evaluating the situation, but as of now there are no plans to euthanize the critically endangered tiger, reports KSNT.
Following the attack, the trainer was listed in critical condition, but conscious and breathing, as first responders transported her to an area hospital.
An update on current condition of the trainer was not provided by officials.
Sanjiv is currently kept separate from a mother tiger and cubs he sired that were successfully bred in captivity at the zoo last year.
