GREENSBORO, NC. (THECOUNT) — The individual who fatally shot a popular Dudley High School senior, James Currie, did so in self-defense, Greensboro police said Friday.
Currie, 17, was shot on Montcastle Drive just after 10:30 p.m. on March 24, reports WXII.
In a press release, investigators said they identified all parties involved in the shooting and the investigation revealed that the shooting occurred during the commission a crime and the person who shot Currie acted in self-defense.
Greensboro police said their department has no reason to believe the person involved poses any ongoing threat to the community.
Officers said the investigation into the incident is ongoing and will be turned over to the District Attorney for review.
The school’s principal said James was on track to graduate in June:
“[James was] always going the extra mile to be a friend to someone in need,” said Principal Rodney Wilds. “Emotions are running very high with both students and staff. He was well-loved, well-respected, and he’s missed dearly.”
