LEE COUNTY, FL. (THECOUNT) — Johnny Messer has been identified as the boater killed in a tragic overboard accident Wednesday morning.
Messer, 32, was traveling on a boat near Captiva Island and Cayo Costa around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday when the vessel was rocked by the wake of another passing boat. The disturbance caused him to fall out of the boat and into the water. He was then struck by the boat propeller, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife.
Investigators say three people were on a vessel when Messer was ejected from the vessel and struck the the propeller.
Witnesses were unable to revive the victim.
Messer was pronounced dead at the scene.
An exact cause of death was not provided by officials.
Family members said Messer was a father who lived in Bokeelia, where he worked as a carpenter and fisherman, reports Fox4Now.
The investigation is still in the early stages and no other details were provided.
