HAMPDEN, ME. (THECOUNT) — The on-duty Maine state trooper struck and killed Wednesday morning in a crash along I-95 in Hampden has been identified as Det. Ben Campbell.
Campbell exited his cruiser at the site of a disabled vehicle along I-95 near the Coldbrook Road overpass in Hampden Wednesday when he was struck by a flying semi-tractor wheel.

During a press conference, Col. John Cote says that two wheels separated from the tractor-trailer truck, one landing in the median, and the other striking Det. Campbell while he stand in the breakdown lane.
Police say the truck driver stopped after passing, and was identified as 52-year-old Scott Wollett.
Wollett was given a routine blood test, reports 11Alive. Those test results are pending.
The trooper was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
