IN Police Chief David Hewitt As Victim In Wednesday Vevay Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash

CRAIG TOWNSHIP, IN. (THECOUNT) — David P. Hewitt, chief of the Rising Sun Police Department in Indiana, has been killed in a single-vehicle crash near the Indiana Kentucky border Wednesday morning.

Hewitt, 49, was operating a vehicle at around 7:20 a.m. along IN-56 near Spring Branch Road in Vevay, Craig Township, when for unknown reasons, crossed centerlines and exited the roadway.

The victim was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead of blunt for trauma injuries suffered in the crash.

Hewitt served as a police officer for 27 years, said Rising Sun Mayor Brent Bascom in a written statement.

“At this time, I am ordering that all flags in the City of Rising Sun be lowered to half-staff and to remain at half-staff for a period of 27 days,” Bascom said, “one day for each year of service that Chief Hewitt gave to the citizens of our area.” source

Hewitt was employed by the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Department, the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department, the Lawrenceburg Police Department and the Rising Sun Police Department, according to the mayor. He joined the Rising Sun Police Department in 1998 and became chief in 2004, reports WCPO.

“On behalf of the City of Rising Sun, I would like to extend our sincere condolences to Chief Hewitt’s family,” Bascom said.

Icy road conditions are believed to have been a factor, but officials are asking anyone with possible information on the crash to contact them at 911.
