WASHINGTON, DC. (THECOUNT) — The Food and Drug Administration is recommending a great tip to avocado lovers to avoid pesky bacteria from ending up in their Guacamole – wash skin thoroughly before cutting.
Even though you don’t consume the peel, the FDA says, the tough skin covering your festive bounty can be teeming with bacteria, aka, listeria, feces and or pesticides, test results show.
But don’t throw out those yummy corn chips just yet..
The FDA says washing the fruit before slicing them is a good way to prevent bacteria and dirt from getting on your knife and into the meat of the fruit.
A new report found that one in every five avocados tested positive for bacteria that can cause listeria. source
The FDA recommends drying the avocados with a paper towel after you’ve washed them and enjoy!
