MIAMI GARDENS, FL. (THECOUNT) — Neico G. Crooks has been identified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement as the man who was shot dead by Miami Gardens police on Friday morning, after attempting to flee in a stolen vehicle Friday.
Crooks, 21, was killed while operating a stolen Lexus after he was shot causing him to crash into a house.
According to police, Crooks was discovered sleeping inside a stolen Lexus SUV at about 4:46 a.m. Friday. After police attempted to wake him, he took off and police opened fire on the vehicle.
Crooks was shot and crashed into a house where a family was sleeping.
Official say, an officer was on a routine patrol when he spotted the 2013 black Lexus RX350 on the 100 Northwest 189th Street, in Miami Gardens, FL. The vehicle was occupied by Crooks.
When the officer ran a check on the license plate it came back stolen and he called for backup.
As officers attempted to get Crooks’ attention, he took off and struck one of the officers with the car. Another officer was also injured in the incident.
Police shot at the getaway car and Crooks careened into a home across the street. The family inside the house was not hurt
“A firearm was found at the scene,” Miami Gardens police spokeswoman Carolyn Frazer said in her report. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement identified Neico Crooks as the man who was involved in a police shooting with Miami Gardens officers early Friday morning. source
Both officers, who were not identified, were hospitalized with leg injuries.
