OMAHA, NE. (THECOUNT) — Ken Fortune has been identified as the officer shot in the line of duty Tuesday in Omaha.

Fortune, 42, is a police veteran who has been with the Omaha Police Department for almost 11 years.

Local law enforcement has confirmed an officer was shot in the line of duty Tuesday in Omaha.

The gang unit officer was shot in the shoulder. His identity is unknown at this time, but he is recovering at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. source

A suspect was shot in the chest and shoulder and is in stable condition as well.

The shooting came in as a help an officer call around 4 p.m.

Deputy Chief Scott Gray told reporters that the call began as a vehicle stop that ended with the passenger of the vehicle and the officer firing at each other.

The driver of the vehicle stopped was taken into custody and was uninjured.

It is not yet clear if the passenger exited the vehicle before shooting, who fired first or how many of the three officers conducting the stop fired on the suspect.
