LUFKIN, TX. (THECOUNT) — According to the Lufkin Police Department, a portion of the Silver Creek Apartments were evacuation after officers found materials used to make bombs while responding to a welfare check call Tuesday.
Authorities said that bomb making components (sands an actual device,) were located inside apartment 206 of the apartment complex near Anderson Elementary School on Brentwood Dr.
Police conducted a welfare check at around 5:30 p.m. Monday because water was dripping from that apartment into a downstairs unit. Police initially found what they believed to be part of a methamphetamine lab. But those parts ended up being bomb making components, per the ATF.
While searching the apartment, investigators found out that the items in question were actually materials used to make bombs and called the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. source
Police said that as of 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, ATF agents were on their way to the scene from Tyler and a Garland Police Department bomb squad was already there.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we are evacuating the units in that building until the ATF can complete its investigation,” Police Chief David Thomas said.
Authorities said more charges are pending.
Anyone with information on the incident should contact police at 911.
