HIGH POINT, N.C. (THECOUNT) — North Carolina police have identified Serenity Givens as the DUI driver that took the life of a High Point man following a Saturday night crash.
Givens, 32, of Greensboro, is accused of causing a crash that killed the driver of a 1995 Toyota, Joey Deweese of High Point.
Deweese, 28, of High Point, suffered mortal injuries after being struck head-on, just south of the Baker Road exit of Business 85.
It happened around 11:55 p.m. That’s the time police started receiving information from multiple callers that a 2013 silver Mazda was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes on Business 85 in the area of West Green Drive. source
Following the crash, Givens was conscious and alert and was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The High Point Fire Department deployed the Jaws Of Life to free Deweese who was trapped inside his vehicle.
Deweese was taken to the hospital with critical injuries and later pronounced dead.
“The High Point Police Department Traffic Unit is currently investigating this traffic accident which is standard protocol for any accident that results in death. Preliminary results indicate that alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash,” police said in a press release.
Givens was released from the hospital and charged with second-degree murder. Her bond was set at $275,000.
