BIG WELLS, TX. (THECOUNT) — Dimmit County officials are confirming at least five undocumented immigrants were killed and multiple others seriously injured following a police pursuit of a fleeing vehicle that ended in a crash in Big Wells, Texas.
Officials say, four people died in the crash and nine others were injured after the Suburban, which was being chased by a Dimmit County deputy, crashed. 12 of the victims are suspected illegal immigrants.
The accident happened off Highway 85 in Big Wells, about 130 miles southwest of San Antonio, Sunday before noon. Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd said there were 14 people in the vehicle at the time of the crash and 12 of them are suspected undocumented immigrants. source
Five of the injured people were transported to a San Antonio hospital. Four of the injured were transported to a local hospital in Dimmit County.
Officials said the operator of the Suburban was also injured and was flown to a San Antonio hospital.
One passenger was taken into custody and they will be pursuing state and federal charges against the driver and one passenger.
